Collar or harness: We reveal the best choice for dogs

Whether dog parents should opt for a dog collar or harness is an age-old debate. However, what makes for the best choice depends on your dog’s breed, personality, health etc.

By understanding what distinguishes collars from harnesses, you can easily identify what works best for your pet. If that doesn’t help, our big reveal will!

Collars are great for mild-mannered dogs that are not prone to pulling. However, if your dog is excitable by nature, a harness is the best choice as it provides better control. Using a harness in a dog’s early years greatly aids in training as well.

For dogs with extreme shapes, such as grey hounds and bulldogs, finding a harness with a good fit might be difficult. The dog might easily slip out or face chafing. In such cases, a collar is a good option.

The best choice for flat-faced dogs like pugs and Boston terriers, who are prone to respiratory issues, is a harness. Also, collars add a lot of pressure on the neck that can in turn increase pressure on the eyes and ears as well as damage the thyroid gland. Not to mention neck injuries from sudden movement. If your dog has been diagnosed with any of these issues, switch to a harness immediately. Small sized dogs and puppies are fragile by nature and will be much more comfortable in a harness.

Collars are easy to slip on and off whereas putting on a harness needs a bit of work. It all depends on how long your dog can sit still. If your dog has long hair, putting on a harness might result in tangles and cause discomfort to your dog.
However, collars are the most secure way to add basic information like identification, RFID tags etc.

Compared to collars, harnesses are available in a huge variety to suit your dog’s needs.
Front-clip harnesses are best for large dogs. It helps train dogs walk in-step with dog walkers, thereby discouraging pulling. Back-clip harnesses are suitable for small dogs as it applies less pressure on their body.

Harnesses are also available in a variety of material such as leather, nylon, sometimes with LED strips even! However, remember that harnesses are not meant to be worn for long hours.

    The most effective solution!

Collars are highly efficient for carrying personal information as well as tracking and fitness devices such as  yours truly! Coupled with a harness, you get better control of your dog during walks. However, in spaces where your dog can run scot free, remove the harness but keep the collar on.
Remember, the comfort of your dog is of paramount importance. So take your dog along with you when you’re purchasing the next collar or harness to ensure the best fit.
