    Dogs and hair shedding

As pet owners, we know what it is like to be constantly covered in cat or dog hair. Finding random hair follicles on your new dress, your white couch and your car seats is just another Tuesday morning for the lot of us. Shedding is a completely natural process in animals. And as annoying as it can be for you, as dog-moms, to keep brushing off these loose hairs, here’s all you need to know about dealing with shedding.

Shedding can be of two types, namely- year-round and seasonal shedding.

    1. Year-round shedding is very common among all dog breeds. Dogs shed old and damaged hair throughout the year. However, the degree in which they shed may differ from one breed to another. Dogs who are primarily meant for colder regions have thicker coats of fur, and hence shed more. But the fact-of-the-matter is that fur is a basic necessity for all animals as it is an insulator and helps keep them warm. Therefore, more the fur, more the shedding.

    2. Seasonal shedding mainly occurs during spring and summer when dogs shed more than usual to keep cool.  In the warmer months, shedding increases significantly but this must not be a cause for worry unless your dog shows some serious signs of ill-health, which has manifested through excessive shedding.

    Some Red Flags

If you’re worried that your pal is shedding more hair than the normal amount, check for the following:

    1. Excessive hair loss and several bald patches.

    2. Brittle hair which breaks away easily and in large amounts.

    3. Wounds on the skin which may have caused infection.

    4. Excessive licking of foot or face rubbing.

    5. Hormonal imbalance-hair loss is an important symptom.

    6. Allergies to the environment, food, etc.

Dos and Don’ts of Hair Shedding:

    Dos:-

    1. Brush your dog regularly with an appropriate brush. There are a variety of brushes available in the market, pick one which suits our buddy the best. Brushing makes the hair softer and keeps your dog clean and free from germs.

    2. Bathe him more often in the summer. This helps get rid of old hair and rejuvenate more and new hair.

    3. Give your little one proper nutrition and keep tabs on any allergies he may have.

    Don’ts:-

    1. Do not shave your dog, as fur is a natural insulator and essential for your little one. Shaving may cause more bald spots, as the fur may not grow back or it can cause abnormal and uneven hair growth.

    2. Usage of excessive products to completely eliminate shedding is not healthy. Shedding is a natural process, so do not try to eliminate it. Using certain products may cause serious skin and other diseases in your dog.

As dog owners, you know that you’ll never get out of cleaning loose hair, so why not lean into it? For hey, a healthy dog is a happy dog, right? 😛
